Mindfulness Training

A student asked a Zen teacher "What is nirvana? "The teacher replied, "Seeing one thing through to the end."

What Exactly Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of becoming aware of this moment. It's deceptively simple, yet oftentimes difficult.
There are powerful benefits to developing this awareness though, which makes the practice quite powerful.
I teach mindfulness in individual therapy or group
sessions.

Benefits to Mindfulness

Becoming less reactive to negative thoughts and events are but one of the benefits of mindfulness.
Have you ever noticed how much of our lives are driven by our thoughts and emotions, especially thoughts and emotions that are outside of this present moment?
If we're unable to check this process, problems can result, both within ourselves and with others.
Let me illustrate:  The thought seems to come out of the blue, "I'd love to have some pancakes right about now."
Before you know it, you're eating them!  This is a perfect example of lack of awareness which results from an automatic response to a thought.
It needn't apply only to pancakes, of course. You may find yourself thinking, "She just doesn't understand me," so you begin an argument.
Or you may think, "It's terrible that I'm not a better partner," and you believe it.
Becoming less reactive to these negative thoughts and events is just one of the powerful benefits to developing mindfulness.

Mindfulness Brings Awareness

Mindfulness brings awareness in the present moment, despite all the other thoughts vying for your attention.
This awareness is the critical first step in changing one's life.
